Overview:
Stationed in Bagdogra, a rural village in Darjeeling district of West Bengal in India, with great vision and faith, 'Peniel Gospel Team' targets the practical change of villages through presenting Jesus Christ. We work in the close proximity of international borders of Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh.

Basic facts:
In 1969 God rescued Rev. Pr. Mammen Joseph from the bondage of deep Catholic Faith and political activities to carry on with His work in the North East India and the neighbouring countries. In obedience to the call he moved out his hometown in Kerala to North Bengal. Ever since the Lord has given a burning vision, the Team strive to reach out the poorest people with gospel and help them to bring up the living standards for a holistic development in Jesus Christ.

As the mission grew, to make the whole work more transparent before the people, society and the Government, Peniel Gospel Team was formed in 1984 and subsequently its work was registered as a charitable society in 1987 in accordance with the laws of the land.

Today, PGT is a mature mission with its many wings as various subsidiary institutions and partnership programmes and flourishing to its esteem to inherit the land for the Kingdom of God.

Work profile:
Hinduism, Islam and Buddhism are the main religions here apart from animism. A good number of immigrants from the neighbouring countries of Bangladesh, Bhutan, Tibet and Nepal have made their settlements here. The region is covered with forests, valleys and Himalayan mountain ranges. The local people are predominantly tribal groups of various classes with agriculture and plucking tea-leaves as their basic occupation. About 80% of them are below the poverty line.

Concerning the issues, Illiteracy, poverty, ignorance, population growth and superstition are prevailent. Jesus laid the burden to us to reach these people, to bring definite changes in their life standards and touch their hearts with the love of Jesus and accept Him as their Savior for a total transformation.

PGT goes ahead with Church Planting as its focus through various mission channels such as Mission teams, raising and training local leaders, crusades and conventions, free schools, childrens Homes and etc,. Applying a systematic and dedicated work model and by the aboundant grace of God, we could encircle a vast area during these 30 years. Presently, PGT has more than 240 Churches and 300 house Churches. The Peniel Missionary Training Centre bringsforth new missionaries for the Lord’s vineyard each year.

Evangelising these remote areas, border lands and adjacent places of neighbouring countries were a challenging task. However, God strengthened and enabled us for a steady progress and now we look forward to your involvement to multiply the results. Join us by supporting PGT with your valuble prayers, visits and resources.
