Demography
:
Many
ethnic communities live in the North bengal
districts of Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri and Coch
Bihar. North Bengal may be broadly classified
into two areas, the Himalayan Vallys and Terrai
Plains.
Himalayan Region - the
High land: In
the hilly Darjeeling and Kalingpong, there are
communities such as Lepchas,
Dukpas, Sherpas and various Nepali
tribes which belong to the mongoloid origin.
Terrai
Plains: The
Terrai plains of Darjeeling district and the
sorrounding Tea garden areas below the Bhutan
Hills, to the east river of Teesta you can find
the communities Oraon, different sects of Santal,
Munda, Chickbarik and few other primitive Ostrals.
| In
the plains of Jalpaiguri and Cooch Behar,
there are 'Mech', the 'Rabha' and 'Kooch'
communities. Importantly, the small endangered
community of Toto ethnic group live in Jalpaiguri
Dt. |

Many
other scattered ethnic groups live around the
area. Another important community, the 'Rajbanshi'
s are found mainly in Coochbehar, Jalpaiguri,
Siliguri and north and south Dinajpur Districts.
The others who constitute the population are
the various Bengali groups, the labour class
migrated from Bihar and Bangladesh.
Apart
from an insignificant minority from these communities,
all falls into strong Hindu or Bhuddist faiths.
Social
/ Political setup :
North
Bengal is a part of the Indian state West bengal
wihis identified as the narrow corridor of India
between Nepal and Bangladesh to reach its North
Eastern states. Over 25 years, the state is
under the communist rule but not stengently
against Christianity. Being a Multi cultural
region due to migration, people live normally
in harmony but the majority still below the
povert line. Major religion is aristocratic
Hinduism who follow a variety of rituals, poojas
and sacrifices.
Christianity
in North Bengal:
When
PGT started its mission 30 years back, it was
a total unreached area. Now many organizations
have started their mission centres and units
in the region and in the last decade, Churches
are blooming at every corner. Being the most
pioneer Church planting mission, PGT has raised
a considerable number of Churches and continueing
with deed with the same enthusiasm
. We see a great revival in the land and we
pray to the Lord of the harvest to send more
laborers and resources so that we can reap the
maximum for our master in Heaven.
