Overview:
The 'People's Republic of Bangladesh' is a beautiful
country adjacent to the West Bengal and other
North Eastern States of India. From 1947 to
1971 it was a part of Pakistan and became an
indipendant country followed by a war.

and People groups: Among
the total population 98% are Bengali's. Tribes
are 1.1% and the others are insignificant to
0.9%. The ethnic tribal groups are Chakma (3,52,000),
Moag (1,85,000), Santhal (1,57,000), Tippera
(1,05,000), Garo (1,02,000), Thrpuri (78,000),
Maitai (56,000), Moe (45,000), Haadi (42,000),
Ussippi (35,000), Bava (31,000), Oraon (24,000)
Dalu (11,000), Phalku (2,200) and Chayng (1,400).
In
addition, the Urdu speaking groups (600000)
Hindi (346000), Burmese (231000) and Biharis
(230000) are living in the country.
The
official religion of Bangladesh is 'Islam'
which constitutes 87% of the total
population. greater majority of the muslims
falls in to 'Sunni' category. Hindus are 11.7%
and rapidly migrating to India due to ethnic
reasons. Budhists constitute 0.6%, Athiests
(110000), Animists (80,000) Bhahay's (4000),
Christians (0.44%)
Christianity
in Bangladesh:
Christians were enjoying a little religious
freedom in earlier days. Similar to other Islamic
countries, since the emergence of Islamic fundamentalism
and extremism, Christians groups and Churches
are attacked more frequently now a days. The
Government too is not favorable to any other
religions except Islams. Many Churches are distroyed
in the recent days. The
Christian population is only 0.44% (0.23%
protestants and 0.21% Catholics)

across North Bengal for the past several years.
The majority of the border dwellers of North
Bengal are mainly the immigrants or refugees
from Bangladesh. These people often visits their
relatives in Bangladesh and the Christians carrys
the Gospel in their trips.
